QUICK TAKES - Fifth ‘Shrek’ may be the last

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., the studio run by Jeffrey Katzenberg, is planning a fifth and final chapter of its “Shrek” films.

The company plans to produce the last movie of the series about a grumpy green ogre after the fourth “Shrek” film is released in 2010, Katzenberg said at the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho.

But DreamWorks Animation so far has committed only to a fourth film, spokesman Rich Sullivan said in an interview.

“The story itself has five chapters,” Sullivan said. “Based on the success of the first three films, at the very least, the next one, ‘Shrek 4,’ is warranted.”

“Shrek the Third,” which cost $160 million to make, has taken in $643.6 million in worldwide ticket sales since its May 18 release, according to Burbank-based Box Office Mojo.

The “Shrek” films have also been important for Viacom Inc.’s Paramount film studio, which distributes DreamWorks’ films, Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone told reporters at the Allen & Co. event. Paramount will make about $80 million on “Shrek the Third,” he said.

The “Shrek” voice cast includes Mike Myers as the ogre, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas.
