It's been around since 1981 -- making it older than a number of our readers -- but the Wolfenstein series of games is still going strong, and after over five years in development, a film adaptation appears to finally be moving forward: Variety reports that the big-screen version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein has got itself a producer, director, and screenwriter.

That producer would be Samuel Hadida, who fans of game adaptations will recognize as the man behind the Silent Hill movie and the first and third Resident Evil films. Handling double duty as Wolfenstein's director and screenwriter will be Roger Avary, who, not coincidentally, wrote Silent Hill. (Seriously, it's all about who you know in this town.)

The games are proven sellers, of course, but whether anyone wants to see Army Ranger B.J. Blazkowicz bring his act to a nearby theater remains to be seen. Return to Castle Wolfenstein blended the series' traditional World War II action with battles against the undead, making it more than your average WWII game, but it's hard to imagine the game making a truly successful leap to film. Then again, people said the same thing about Robert Ludlum's Bourne books, so a Wolfenstein move might just be crazy enough to work.
