Preacher Adaptation Still Coming to HBO?
And look who might be directing the pilot...
Mark Steven Johnson is still trying to bring a series based on Garth Ennis' Preacher comics to HBO -- but director Howard Deutch is no longer attached to the project. Who might be stepping in for him?
According to a report posted at Comics2Film yesterday, the director interested in filming Preacher's pilot episode might have the action credentials required to soothe fans who cried foul after Grumpier Old Men's Deutch signed on. From the article:
Word is Robert Rodriguez is circling the project and he's just one of many top-shelf directors interested in the series.
Could be an interesting match, no?
For those unfamiliar with the comics, they followed the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher who -- try to follow along here -- becomes linked to Genesis, the all-powerful offspring of an angel and a devil. Custer goes in search of God (yes, literally) and is joined on his quest by a cast of characters including his ex-girlfriend, an Irish vampire, and John Wayne's ghost.
There are dozens of plot points, as you might expect for a comic that ran for five years, meaning Preacher would probably fare much better as an HBO series than a film -- which is probably why View Askew's planned adaptation fell through. The same fate might befall the series, however:
Our sources tell us HBO still has not committed to the show...the project is "on the one yard line." Only you can push it into the end zone, fans.

![]() on Sep 06 2007 08:19 AM holy **** is that great news. i don't even care of Rodriguez is brought on, that Deutchbag getting kicked off is excellent news. maybe HBO's lackluster post-Sopranos summer had something to do with it? (Reply to this) |

on Sep 06 2007 08:27 AM One of the better comic book series around. Mark Steven Johnson's name makes me uneasy, but hopefully some talented directors will be involved. This should be one brutal show. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 06 2007 09:09 AM wiggins, i agree. he should have never even started. hack. oddly enough, i felt that rodriguez would have been a perfect fit for an R rated non kiddie ghost rider, if he had made it in the style of planet terror. you know, the rough around the edges horror movie (not the missing reels and stuff). on Sep 06 2007 10:26 AM Preacher would be a perfect series for HBO. Except that as soon as it would get great reviews, and become wildly popular in its third of five planned seasons, HBO would inexplicably cancel it. Because that's what they do these days... Showtime should try and snag this one if there's any hope for seeing the series to completion. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 06 2007 12:35 PM I actually loved Daredevil the D.C. and think Johnson is a really talented writer. If he's writing and producing and they get someone like R.R. to direct, I'm there. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 06 2007 06:46 PM I believe, like Watchman, a comic that should not be made into a film/series because it will only disappoint. Plus, if you have actually read the Preacher series you would know that half of it would barely make it into the NC/17 area. Hostel? bah... Got nothin' on Preacher. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 06 2007 09:52 PM Robert Rodriguez "Preacher" = wet dream Hell, they could give MSJ a dozen more comic properties to mess up; that would be worth a "Preacher" series w/ Rodriguez at the helm. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 06 2007 09:55 PM wow, yes, I hate this new system, can't edit, and they took out my plus sign; supposed to read Robert Rodriguez "PLUS" "Preacher" = wet dream (Reply to this) |
