Toy Story Trilogy Going to Infinity...and 3-D
Prepare to take your children to the theater many times.

Blog Article | Discuss Article
It may have taken over a decade in arriving, but Toy Story 3 is officially on its way -- and Disney is throwing a big ol' 3-D party to celebrate its arrival.

The studio announced Thursday that not only will Toy Story 3 arrive in theaters June 18, 2010, and not only will it be presented in Disney Digital 3-D, but it'll be preceded by theatrical re-releases for Toy Story (on October 2, 2009) and Toy Story 2 (on February 12, 2010).

Oh, and by the way, they'll both be in 3-D, too. Walt Disney chairman Dick Cook said it best:

"We are committed to bringing moviegoers the best and most exciting 3-D movie experience, and we think they're going to love seeing Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and all the wonderful 'Toy Story' cast of characters in an eye popping and dazzling way. John Lasseter and the animation team are putting all their passion and hard work into making this the greatest 3-D experience yet, and we're excited to share their efforts with audiences everywhere."

Lasseter, adding to the overall vibe of peace, love, and sweet animated goodness, added:

"The 'Toy Story' films and characters will always hold a very special place in our hearts and we're so excited to be bringing this landmark film back for audiences to enjoy in a whole new way thanks to the latest in 3-D technology. I am sure that this is going to be nothing short of fantastic and people are going to be blown away by the experience. With 'Toy Story 3' shaping up to be another great adventure for Buzz, Woody and the gang from Andy's room, we thought it would be great to let audiences experience the first two films all over again and in a brand new way. 3-D offers lots of great new possibilities for the art of animation and we will continue to use this new technology to tell our stories in the best possible way."

According to Disney's announcement, Lasseter will "personally oversee" the 3-D conversion process for the first two Toy Story movies, which will involve "retrieving all the original digital elements and rebuilding them." Lee Unkrich, co-director of Toy Story 2, will direct Toy Story 3.

All I can say is... They better not screw this up. Disney sequels, with the exception of TS2, are notoriously bad. It would suck for the legacy of TS to be marred by Disney Sequelitis. And the 3D thing reeks of a gimmick designed to compensate for a weak film.
I'm worried.

Nice, the Disney studios have a good future now that Pixar is bringing TS 3 along with 1 & 2 in 3D AND the Disney Animation Dept. going back to 2D animation as well.

The sequel was just as good as the first, if not better. I trust Pixar will do a good movie. Are 3D movies going to need a special set-up? Right now they only seem to be on IMAX. In Nebraska, our IMAX can't even project a feature-length film because we don't have enough projectors. We only get 45 minute movies because of this.

I'd like to see 3D movies become relevant to the entire industry.

I don't see any reason to be worried based on disney's lousy track record for animated sequels.

Even though Disney owns pixar now, the pixar folk are still in creative control of their projects. And Pixar has been pretty strong all along.

I'm a bit surprised about the 3D thing, disney has been excited about it for years, but the pixar guys have said that it's more a gimmick. If pixar was going to try it out, this does seem like a logical film to pick. And a 3D re-release of the first two has the potential to make a TON of easy money.

wow i'm a dork, 27 and i'm actually PUMPED to see this kid's movie.

the 3d really depends on the flick though, sometimes you hardly even notice the 3d. sometimes its not even worth the extra 4 bucks, but its still a cool "gimmick". now Saving Private Ryan in 3d?? phew that'd have been a ridiculous opening beach scene. Cloverfield in 3d? now THAT would be worth it just to see who DIDN'T barf...

If "Toy Story 3" in 3D resembles the quality of "Meet the Robinsons", it will be fanstasitc!!!

As for the other Toy Storys being in 3D, I am a little more hesitant to be excited. When a film isn't shot with the intention to be seen in 3D, most times there just isn't enough there to make it visually interesting for 90-minutes.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" 3D they've been putting out the last two years at the theaters is very mediocre. It's cool for about 10-minutes and then it wears off because there was nothing in the movie designed for a 3D audience. I expect the same so-so effectiveness when seeing the other Toy Story films in 3D.

by 2010, what WON'T be in 3D? Once that deacde begins, the future will officially be here.

we're talking in-house helper robots in every japanese and south korean home, wireless everything and probably government-required post natal subdermal implants. you think people are still gonna be watching lame ole 2D?

Then they'll make that 3D projector thing from Minority Report and the home thater game will never look back. I say screw the robots, lose the wires, big brother is coming and, in general, 3D will be at least 50% better than 2D.

The 3D trilogy will look great on Blu-Ray one day, but not HD-DVD since they're not supported by Disney, anyway HD-DVD will be long dead by that point.

Though the concept of 3-D is cool, IMO the gimmick tends to be more of a distraction than an effective storytelling tool. Instead of concentrating on the characters and story in Beowulf, for example, I was concentrating on all of the cool 3-D effects. Same thing for the IMAX version of the last Harry Potter where the climactic last 20 minutes of the movie were in 3-D. I have no idea what actually happened during that stretch of the movie because I was too focused on things flying off the screen.

As for the "Toy Story" movies being converted to 3-D, my guess is that they will look far better than "The Nightmare Before Christmas" because they were created in the digital realm and can more easily be re-rendered to create stereo-viewing effects. Nightmare was shot on film so an organic re-rendering wasn't possible and the existing film elements had to be manipulated to simulate a 3-D effect.

3D movies rock! I love the trend! I agree, it may be distracting, but it's perfect for those movies that can visually rock your boxers off. Kids love 3D - I'm not sure why they didn't start doing it again sooner.

Perhaps once 3D becomes more commonplace, the novelty of it will wear off and its usefulness as a storytelling device will reach it's full potential. Until then, it's just a cool looking--yet distracting--gimmick.
