Michael Douglas, Amber Tamblyn Looking Beyond a Reasonable Doubt
Peter Hyams updating Fritz Lang's classic.

Blog Article | Discuss Article
What do Gordon Gekko, General Hospital's original Emily Quartermaine, and the guy who directed Timecop have in common?

Variety reports that Michael Douglas, Amber Tamlyn, and Jesse Metcalfe have signed on to star in a remake of Fritz Lang's 1956 classic Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, to be written and directed by Timecop helmer Peter Hyams. The plot, in case you haven't seen the original, is laid out helpfully here:

Story finds a journalist investigating a corrupt district attorney and setting himself up as a murder suspect, only for the DA to uncover the plot and incriminate the scribe.

The remake, which starts shooting March 3, is being set up by Foresight Unlimited. The studio's Mark Damon tells Variety:

"The combination of an outstanding cast and a visionary director will see (Fritz) Lang's classic noir given a true 21st century spin for a new generation of cinema-goers."

Hyams did a very good remake of "Narrow Margin" in 1990 and 1981's "Outland," which is one of his best films, was essentially "High Noon" in space. Michael Douglas and Hyams also collaborated on an overlooked, underrated film at the time that has gained a lot of fans over the years, "The Star Chamber" (1983).

Hyams remaking Lang?

That;s like Bay remaking Welles.

Hyams is a solid director and the original "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" isn't all THAT highly regarded in the first place. If it turns out as good as his 1990 remake of "Narrow Margin," we'll be in for a very entertaining film.
