George Lucas Bringing 3D Star Wars: The Clone Wars to Theaters
Theatrical release to kick off new CGI series.

George Lucas' 3D CGI continuation of the Star Wars saga isn't just coming to television this fall -- the new series will kick-off this summer with a full-length theatrical release.

Warner Bros., Turner Broadcasting, and production company Lucasfilm Animation announced yesterday that the eagerly-anticipated series, which will air in 30-minute "mini-movies" on TNT and Cartoon Network, will begin with a theatrical release on August 15.

Anticipation on the project has been building for years following the two-year run of Lucas' previous animated Star Wars: Clone Wars series. That show aired on Cartoon Network from 2003-2005 and covered the period between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, filling in the Star Wars mythos with stories featuring Count Dooku, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The new Clone Wars will also cover events in the same time period, including closer looks at supporting characters like Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's Togruta Padawan and Jedi commander Kit Fisto, whose fate is sealed in Episode III.

Clone Wars

From the official Star Wars: Clone Wars site:

"I felt there were a lot more Star Wars stories left to tell," said George Lucas, executive producer of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. "I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the art of animation forward."

This would be cool news if the art style these are done in didn't give me hives. But hey, that's just me, and I suspect I'm in the minority.

Sorry, I think that too much extra star wars stuff is making the 'star wars universe' fall apart into garbage. It existed when it circled around the original trilogy, but now it doesn't feel..i dunno...'official'?

the exar kun stuff of star wars is pretty intresting and gives the whole story a major depth much like silmarillion does for LOTR...but some of the stuff like this animated series seems boring compared to the stories set in the old times

anyway i really dont like the animation style.

Am I the only one who likes the animation style? It's just the style from the 2-d mini (which looked weird in pictures but beautiful in motion), done in cgi.

I wonder if they'll promote this like they have the other ones, see if they can turn get more people than just kids and fans. I'd love to see it in 3-d.

This sounds about as ridiculous as the original movie.

Nerds, please don't bash me for my humble opinion. My ego would be crushed.

I really wish he would bring the stories of the the books the scrren. So many great adventures and stories would keep the shows running forever and it'd be great to see luke training padawans and Jacen Solo becoming the new Dark lord of the Sith and even going in depth into the Ancient jedi and sith stories. we know what happens in the clone wars. A crap ton of jedi die and the proverbial crap hits the fan. Lets move on.

Have you kids even seen the, shall I say, EMMY winning Clone Wars cartoon?? If this new show (and flick!) is anything like that 2D fare, I'm well on board!

Not sure about the animation style yet...I'll have to see some video.

But the first Clone Wars series was surprisingly good. So this could be cool.

I'm not the biggest fan of that kind of animation, but hey, if it's something Star Wars in theaters (AND in 3-D), I'm in. :) This should be fun. Whee!
