I'm suprised, and sad at the same time. I know it won't really effect upcoming films, but i always liked seeing the new line movie logo before rush hour and such. I loved it before lord of the rings. The dramatic logo would set in with the dramatic music and show that new line logo, all dark. I know it sounds lame, but i liked it. So long New Line.

I'm no lawyer but I'm sure the rights to LOTR will now be with Warner Bros. as New Line is absorbed into that studio.

Why is Elf listed as a popular film?

I can't believe that this will kill the new Freddy movie plans (although maybe it should).

New Line stuck a finger up (Bob Shaye especially) at Peter Jackson and didn't appreciate the HUGE success his LOTR gave that studio and now look who's left standing when the dust clears. If New Line had a better relationship w/ Jackson, a better accounting department, and a little more discretion w/ what they chose to release for movies, maybe they wouldn't have screwed themselves. This is a case of studio heads shooting themselves in the foot.

anyway..... To bad this didn't happen a year or two ago, back when such a decision would have promised a speedy deal with Jackson to direct the Hobbit and a 2009 release date.

Did anyone else see the Charlie Rose interview of Robert and Michael? They seem like two very down to Earth guys, they were even willing to address the Peter Jackson situation to a degree, although they didn't reveal anything we didn't already know.

As always, people, the truth falls somewhere in the middle as to who is to blame for these situations.

This is a really sad moment because as Jen Yamato noted this is the

studio produced that produced the first turtles movie and i will always

remember seeing those two black film reels criss cross and settle into the

familar black and blue object. and after seeing the 1st turtle movie, the

logo was forever in stitched in mind. And later on in my life, those

tremendous L.O.T.R. movies cemented that logo and company into my heart

forever. it's a really sad day for me, the couchtomatoe:(

Wow. Incredible to believe they are folding only a few years after producing one of the two biggest franchises since... well, Star Wars, I think.

But it really does come down to bad business decisions. They got too ambitious too fast. They bet the farm and lost. Shame.

... and then Semi Pro made $400 million worldwide, but awwwww... no one there to claim the money. ;)

I don't get it. Wasn't New Line, up to that point, ALREADY a subsidiary of Warners? Looks like it will still live on (like Touchstone and Buena Vista), only its executives are 86ed. The difference being that this sort of legal tangle can only delay The Hobbit just THHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAT much longer, under another studio banner. Wonder if del Toro's contract will be in dispute.

As for the Peter Jackson deal, that's just a matter of relying on studio accountant departments instead of independent firms. If you do that, you might as well beg for "net" instead of "gross" backend profits. Oh and forego your director's fee while you're at it. And your director credit.

Hmmmm. Must've also been all that Rings merch warming up the toy pegs that "Warners" went broke on.

Robert Shaye...a down-to-earth guy? Forget it. I worked for New Line and I could tell you stories about the crap that went on there. I'm surprised this didn't happen years ago. Bob Shaye had an intern every year whose sole job was to walk his dog. The same dog that Bob Shaye forced his employees to sing Happy Birthday to every year. The same dog that Bob Shaye REFUSED to keep on a leash right up until the day it jumped off a cruise ship to its death.

New Line was full of nothing but back-stabbing, money-grubbing executives with not one ounce of creativity (except when it came to expense reports and accounting...then they got very creative). Seriously. It made me sick the whole time I worked there.

Has everyone forgotten the absolute toad Mike DeLuca?! Dropped trou for a BJ at a Christmas party in the backyard of the house of the president of Warner Brothers a few years ago? Got a freakin' promotion a few months later. There's your New Line.
