Gears of War in Summer 2010?
Filmmakers have got their script on.
by Jeff Giles | March 31, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
The Gears of War adaptation is still grinding.

ComingSoon.net had a chat over the weekend with the film's producer, Wyck Godfrey, and he assured fans that things are still moving along as planned:

We've got our script on and a director we're about to attach. We'll hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010.

Non-gamers in the audience who are asking "What's Gears of War, anyway?" can get caught up with this synopsis, helpfully supplied by ComingSoon:

Since its debut in November 2006, "Gears of War" has broken sales records on the Microsoft Xbox 360, selling more than 3 million copies worldwide. The game thrusts players into humankind's epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The story unfolds as a ragtag group of soldiers use every last ounce of strength to survive the onslaught from the forces of evil, which begins on the historic Emergence Day.

Last March, it was announced that Stuart Beattie had signed on to write the script; according to ComingSoon, he worked with the game's lead designer, Cliff Bleszinski, to "define a treatment" for the adaptation.

so wait, this is now a more viable potential franchise than halo? i like gears and all, but the complaint about making halo (not enough public recognition to justify the requisite big budget) applies even more so to gears of war. i mean the halo series has been around since 02 and has sold a lot more than 3 million copies.

I wonder how they'll achieve the look of the characters from the game, just because proportionally they're so highly stylized (at least twice the muscle mass of anyone from 300...) this has beowulf mo-cap written all over it to me. However i wouldn't mind some 3-D bloodspray off the chainsaw bayonet kills (of which there's sure to be several).

Last I heard, Epic Games was going to work with the film so hopefully they'll force them to stick to the original story and such and not just them go freely with the film.

I hope they do this right, and although its unlikey they will get the characters looking the way they do in the game, i still think it could work very well.

Eric Bana to play the lead anyone?

It's pretty well-known on this site how I feel about video game-movies. They don't work, as I've explained before, because the control you have over the characters in removed and suddenly you're left with a very flimsy structure.

Gears of War is a game that aspires to be cinematic, especially in the camera motions. Couldn't they have just let the game have that movie-feel and not waste our time with a silly film adaptation?

do studios ever learn? = videogame movies = flop and/or critically panned. if they make a bioshock movie i'll be really pissed. great games do not = greta movies.

Lord Vapor captured my initial thoughts on this headline. Arendr is also completely right on. Just because a video game has a good look and feel, or even a good 'video game storyline' does not mean that it'll make a good movie.

Leave this game, Halo, and Bioshock alone. Great games, but they'll make crappy movies.

The trouble with Halo IMO, is that while the games n gameplay was good, and the marines looked good. The Aliens were horribly designed cannon fodder. Gears looks and Is serious with no silly cartoon character villains to ruin it.

Instead of both of these though, Hollywood should pump all its games to film money combined into making 6 massive epic HALF-LIFE movies.

i think bio-shock has what it takes for a better movie but gears of war would be the next best. but they will have to spend alot of money and get some good stars. i dont want to see it look like or feel like that other shoot'em up video game movie DOOM.

Let's they just hope that the don't give us some CGI creatures and maybe more like live action things that could scare us.

can we please have Gears 2 on the 360 instead of a terrible movie in the theaters? unless the rap song made of trains catchphrases is used for the scoring, then i might watch it.
