Posted on 8/5/09 at 2:36 PM | Last edited on 8/5/09 at 2:38 PM Lake of Fire tackles the issue of abortion with fearless and graphic candor. It throws some conservative punches by interviewing women who are about to undergo or who have just undergone an abortion. The conflict over what they are about to do, or what they have just done, is palpable. Not content to leave the topic in the subjective realm of language, however, the movie also shows the procedure. The ensuing visual images are like a challenge - "this is what you support."
The film then throws some liberal punches by interviewing the religious extremists who kill doctors and firebomb abortion clinics. It exposes their rigid and exclusionary belief systems and shows equally disturbing images of murdered clinic employees - "this is what you support." Intellectuals from both sides of the argument are interviewed, and although it would be disingenuous of me to deny that the film leans to the left, I still think its attempt at objectivity results in one of the best and most thought-provoking documentaries I have seen in years. |
