Posted on 8/28/04 at 11:54 AM Best in Show: Ewan McGregor (despite dodgy 'Watford' accent)
One for the future: Anna Friel Stand-out scene: Barfarama Brainer or no-brainer: No brainer Stands up to one viewing or repeated?: One DVD commentary any good?: n/a TV The question is, how could a great story with terrific dramatic potential get turned into such a mundane, made-for-TV-a-like turgathon? Even Ewan McGregor (sporting a 'Watford' brogue that is worse than even his painfully attempted young Alec Guinness 'impression' in the dreadful Star Wars prequels) can't drag this out of the doldrums. We're all familiar with the way Nick Leeson looked and the filmmakers don't even make a rudimentary attempt to Leesonify McGregor which is both perplexing and annoying. Anna Friel's role as his wife Lisa is all the more thankless due to the paucity of her screentime and this meat-free 'wife' role really did her no favours in the early years of her film career. The story of Nick Leeson's single-handed destruction of the Barings Bank through the creation of a rolling 'errors' account to cover his mistakes really deserves a better treatment than this by numbers effort. |
