The history of the film Ju-on is just as confusing as the film actually is. I still don't know whether this is the first or the third in the series, or a remake of the first (Evil Dead 2 style) or a reboot. Whatever the case, this is the version that was remade in America (as The Grudge). While the American may be a rare case of being slightly more effective than the original, (which isn't discrediting its director considering Shimizu helmed all in the series (save the third American sequel),) this certainly lays the foundation of a pretty spooky tale. The film slightly abandons typical narrative, not staying with one character in particular, but numerous characters as they come in contact with this cursed house. It does what any great horror film does and develops a handful of genuinely creepy images, and yes they are creepy even if it is just a Japanese actors in whiteface. http://thisguyoverhere.com/horror/2003/ju-on-2003/ |
