Here's a real diaster, that many adore. I'll be the first to say it. This film is as overated as Katharine Hepburn's career is. Yes, she is an overated actress. I... More

This is my 69th review. And I do another documentry.

What is best for video game competition? "Halo"? "Super Smash Bros."? Sure, those are great but for straight up heated competitive spirit, you can't do better than Retro games. And I'm talking 80's Arcade cabinets, "Pac Man", "Q-Bert", "Space Invaders", and of course "Donkey Kong". And some people like these games more than others...

Enter Walter Day founder of Twin Galaxies, an organazation that tracks video game world records. And Walter Day truly has a passion for it, and has always been impressed with video game master Billy Mitchell. Billy, famous for getting a perfect score in "Pac-Man", and getting the world record in "Donkey Kong". He's rich, successful, famous (among gamers), and was pretty much undefeated.

So then comes Steve Wiebe (pronounced Wee-Bee) who is described by his family as a person a jack of all trades but master of none. After getting fired from another job, he tries out his skill in the world of "Donkey Kong", and after a few weeks of using math, logic, and and hand to eye coordination all worked out, he sets the new WORLD RECORD, puts it on tape, and sends it to Walter Day. He's convinced, but Billy Mitchell and his crew want more solid proof, so Mitchell sends people to Wiebe's house to take apart and investigate his Arcade cabinet, and find out Roy "Mr. Awesome" Schildt gave the machine to Wiebe, and unknow to Wiebe, Schildt and Mitchell have a long lasting hatred for one another, so they decide Wiebe did not get the score fairly.

But Steve won't let the "Disciples" of Mitchell stop him from trying to set the record again, this time in front of a crowd of people at the Funspot Family Fun Center, a place where many records have been set. And he does it, he sets a new high...again! But that most demonic of gamers, Billy Mitchell sends in a tape showing that he had a higher score than Wiebe, despite the fact that Mitchell has always said live scores are only credible. So, Wiebe goes home to his family, defeated.

BUT, 9 months later he's ready to set a new high, for the third time, and has the full support of his family and is ready for Mitchell and his goons.

Now this, THIS, is a documentry that anyone can enjoy, even if you don't like video games. (In which case, you're different...in a bad way.) It's about the spirit of the game, and you really want Wiebe to win. And if you don't have a soul, you'll want Mitchell. But in all seriousness, gamers respect Billy Mitchell. Why? Because he's so cold and selfish! A great villain...except he's being himself! And Walter Day, he's just a great guy. Because of his love of video games? Sure, but mostly because of his love of video games, and he's a fairly eccentric old man! And let's not forget that old lady who was a "Q*Bert" master. I mean, "Q*Bert" is hard!

Now Walter Day said this documentry got a few thingd wrong, suchas the fact that Mitchell's tape was discarded awhile after viewing it. So some of the stuff in here is edited in a way to make it more intense, but hey, whatever. Wiebe still is awesome, and Mitchell is still Mitchell.

Without a doubt, this is one fo the best movies of 2007. And it's the best documentry I've ever seen. A 10 out of 10.
