The Man Who Laughs (1928)

Posted on 6/6/09 at 2:24 PM Horror flick? Not really . . Disturbing? Definitely. I don't consider myself any great aficionado of silent film. In fact, I'm not partial to them at all. However, like Nosferatu, this had me captivated with the striking visual display . . not only from Gwynplaine himself, but also from characters like Barkilphedro, the grinning jester, and Lord Dirri-Moir, the jagged-toothed big-nosed Lord who is betrothed to Duchess Josiana. Worth a watch for the imagery and the history alone, as Gwynnplaine was direct visual inspiration for Batman's The Joker.
