The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Agrees With....
Posted on 11/3/09 at 9:13 PM At first glance The Devil Wears Prada seems like any other dumb “chick flick” with absolutely no cinematic value. I have seen many of those kinds of films, and this is certainly not one of them. Andy Sachs (Hathaway) seeks employment as a journalist, and applies at Runway, a famous fashion magazine, for a job as an assistant. Her boss to be, Miranda Priestly (Streep), is as unforgiving and unsavory an employer as could be imagined, so after her interview Andy assumes that she has failed in her employment attempt. Despite her unfashionable self, Miranda hires her and Andy’s life becomes a relative pit of hell. As her relationships with her friends, family, and lover begin to fall by the wayside, Andy is becoming a work-o-holic. She is changing drastically and does not even realize it.
I am not exactly a fashion guru in the strictest sense (in other words not at all), but I can say one thing for certain: the costume designer for this film did an excellent job. I guess that is to be expected from a film about fashion, but the fact is nonetheless impressive. The film was surprisingly comedic, I laughed often, and yet I still felt for the characters during the dramatic moments. It is actually difficult to classify this film as a romantic comedy, because though the romantic relationship is vital to the film, it doesn’t fit the stereotypes associated with them. I digress; the movie was a successful comedy. The plotline was surprisingly interesting, not complex, but a good spin on old plot ideas. The scripting was very well done, especially considering the film’s genre, and the acting was very good. Meryl Streep portrayed an excellent jackass, and her role was somewhat emotionally diverse. Do I think she deserved an Oscar nomination for her role? No. I do not intend to belittle her part, but an Oscar nomination was a bit over the top. I also must remark on Anne Hathaway’s performance as Andy: this is probably the best acting role that I have ever seen her in. The cinematography was good, and a portion of the art direction was well done. I loved the soundtrack. This is easily one of the best soundtrack choices that I have heard in modern film. The music itself was great, but more importantly, it fit the emotion of the film incredibly well. Most soundtracks feel like background music, this one played an important role in the film. I would even venture that the best part of this film was its soundtrack. Kudos to the music supervisor I suppose. I though roughly enjoyed this film, and would consider it for a repeat watch. I know for a fact that women would love this film, and men, you just need to grow some balls and watch it. I was particularly well done, and I would definitely recommend it. I give The Devil Wears Prada 7.7 stars out of 10. |
