An all star cast with a all fail plot.
Jamie Babbit did a remarkable job trying to live up to her But I'm a Cheerleader notoriety but somehow fell short.
By the end of this film I was resisting the urge to do a palm to face motion.
Like But I'm a Cheerleader, this film was about gaining self identity through trying on various identities. What I had a problem with was the sloppy rush to end the movie in a "happy ending" style, the really predictable attractions, and the bland setting up of characters.
There is an element of improbability that makes it hard for me to get over. It's just so typical that a dominant personality happens to meet a low self-esteemed personality and takes her "under her wing."
It also disturbed me the range of extremes the main character goes through just in response to a "crush." I felt deprived of a realistic transition.
As if all these women's rights issues being brought up were just a right of passage for a young lesbian to go through and not a legitimate issue in our society.
As if she's only picketing the plastic surgeon clinic and taking on all these social issues out of obligations because that's what it means to be a lesbian.
Overall, I feel as if there is no heart in this film, only a rush to get things done, stick along with the basic plot, and throw in a bunch of lesbians that are on different ends of the spectrum to make the movie "open minded."
In retrospect, this film had alot of potential to explore a legitimate transition of opinion and sexuality in each of its characters but did not follow through on anything other than a "happy ending."
The part of me that loved But I'm a Cheerleader is greatly disappointed and wished Babbit would go back and redo everything. But the other half has given up and just wish she'd realize her mistakes and produce a new film to cover-up this catastrophe.
